　初めに国立肖像画美術館へ行きました。壁は王や女王、軍の英雄、俳優などの有名な人たちの肖像画で完全に埋め尽くされていました。とてもたくさんの顔に圧倒されて、少し目眩がしました。

メアリーの手紙は続く。

館内を全て見終わった後、外に出ました。あんなに大勢の有名人たちに会って疲れたので、どこか座る場所が欲しくて、とてもいい感じの喫茶店を見つけました。ロンドンは何でも高価です。コーヒー1杯ですらニューヨークよりもずっと高いのです。ところで、紅茶を注文すると「ブラックにしますか、ホワイトにしますか？」と聞かれました。それは「ミルクがいるか、いらないか？」という意味です。

　30分ほどお茶を楽しんだ後、レスタースクエアへお土産を買いに行きました。前に大きなユニオンジャックがプリントされた素敵なTシャツを買いました。

【Read】　（若き日のネルソン）

　イギリスは島国なので、常に強力な海軍に頼り、偉大な海の英雄を数多く輩出してきた。その中で多分最も有名なのはホレーショ・ネルソンだろう。その手腕と勇気によってイギリスはナポレオンの脅威から救われたのだ。

　ホレーショは1758年に生まれ、12歳で船乗りになった。かなり小柄でひ弱だったので、彼が立派な船乗りになるとはだれも思ってはいなかった。しかし、彼は恐れを知らぬ心の持ち主だった。

　北極地方で任務に就いていたとき、彼ははらはらするような体験をした。氷上にホッキョクグマを見かけたので、銃を持って追いかけ、撃って傷を負わせたのだ。しかし、手負いの熊は急に向きを変えて、若いネルソンに襲いかかって来た。銃に弾を込める時間がなかったので、逃げるしかなかった。しかし、ネルソンは銃をこん棒として使いながら、熊のほうへ向かっていった。運良くネルソンの仲間の一人が彼を助けに走ってきて、熊の頭を撃ち、ネルソンの命を救った。

　ネルソンは勇敢な男であっただけでなく、熟練した船乗りでもあった。航海に必要な事はすべて習得した。十代ですでに十分な経験を積んでいたので、20歳の若さで船長に任命された。後に彼は自国のために大いなる働きをした。今でも、イギリスで最も尊敬される10人の男性の中に入っている。

【コラム】

　ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーをはじめ多くの美術館には、歴史や美術の教科書に載っているような名画がそこかしこにかかっている。日本人にとって意外なのは、国立の美術館は入場料が無料だということだ。（入り口に寄付を求める箱が置いてある。）ロンドンへ行って実物を見ることは難しいが、今の時代、インターネットで自分の部屋にいながらにして美術館めぐりができる。コンピューター教室でこういう場所の訪ね方を教えることも総合学習の一つであろう。

ナショナル・ギャラリー

　レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ、ボッティチェリ、ラファエロ、ベラスケス、レンブラント、ゴッホ、ルノワール、モネなどの偉大な画家の名作が所狭しと並ぶ。鼻をこすりつけられるぐらい近寄って見ることができる。

ナショナル・ポートレート・ギャラリー

　王族や政治家から映画俳優やファッション・デザイナーまでイギリスを代表する人々の肖像画が並ぶ。どの展示室、どの階に行っても、並んでいるのは顔、顔、顔・・・。

テート・ブリテン

　テート・ギャラリーが名称を変えて2005年に新生した美術館。16～19世紀のイギリスの絵画を中心に収蔵する。特にターナーのコレクションで有名。

テート・モダン

　テート・ギャラリーから20世紀以降の作品を写して2005年にオープンした世界最大の現代美術館。ピカソ、ダリ、ウォーホールなどの作品が収められている。

ビクトリア＆アルバート博物館

　陶磁器、銀食器、ドレスなどをはじめ様々な美術工芸品を収蔵している。

大英図書館展示室

王立美術院

コートールド・ギャラリー

　ゴッホの肖像画やドガの『踊り子たち』など印象派のコレクションに定評がある。

バービカン・センター

大英博物館

　ハンス・スローン卿の8万点近いコレクションをもとにできた世界最古の博物館。世界中の遺跡から集めた（口の悪い人は「盗んだ」とも言う）歴史的にも美術館にも貴重な発掘物が並んでいる。特に、ロゼッタ・ストーンをはじめとするエジプト関係の展示は人気が高い。何日、あるいは何年通っても見尽くせないほどの膨大なコレクションを持つ。
